Lore & Background

Perfect World begins with Shi Hao's childhood in Stone Village, located in the Great Wilderness. Born with the Supreme Bone, he loses it when it is removed and transplanted into his clan relative Shi Yi. Surviving the ordeal, Shi Hao is raised in Stone Village, where his early encounters with the Willow God, ancient creatures, and rival groups introduce the novel's cultivation system, which emphasizes physical refinement, inherited abilities, and supernatural techniques. As Shi Hao grows stronger, he leaves the Great Wilderness and enters increasingly advanced cultivation environments, facing conflicts that expand from personal rivalries to struggles involving entire realms. The later narrative concerns the upper realms, the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, the Sea of Boundaries, and the historical origin of a darkness threatening the fictional universe. The final volume describes Shi Hao's efforts to protect the Heavenly Court and the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths before entering the Sea of Boundaries in search of the source of the darkness.

Reader's Guide

Perfect World is significant as a major work in Chinese online literature, quickly rising to prominence on the Qidian platform during its serialization. It ranked first on Baidu's mobile popularity chart and comprehensive index in the second half of 2014, and also topped the Shenma search rankings on UC Browser. The novel was among the most popular xuanhuan novels still in serialization at the time, and it continued to rank highly in Qidian's monthly-ticket, reader-recommendation, and book-review rankings. Its legacy includes adaptation into a mobile game, Taigu Xianyu, during its serialization, and an animated television adaptation that premiered on Tencent Video in April 2021, produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and animated by Fuxi Film. The novel's setting draws on classical Chinese mythology and traditional cultural elements, as noted in a 2018 report on Tencent Video's animation programming. Perfect World also contributed to the broader expansion of Chinese web fiction into games and other media during the mid-2010s.
